What are the key themes of the NDIS?

  • Participant choice and control

  • Social and economic participation

  • Increased independence and functioning – helping participants to live independently and achieve their goals

  • Reassure and build rapport with families and carers – communicate clearly and work together to help participants to achieve their goals

  • Provide reasonable and necessary supports – supports required for the pursuit of life goals and aspirations, making sure participants participate in the community to the fullest extent possible, supports must be good value for money

  • Help people living with disability to manage their disability and enjoy life

  • Core Supports - Bulk of funding; Flexible; In home supports eg. home maintenance, gardening, budgeting, cleaning; Social and community participation eg. going to a cafe, shopping

  • Capacity Building Supports – Develop skills to be more independent eg. social work, psychology, physiotherapy, personal training, life skills, behavioural supports, mentoring

  • Capital Supports – Home modifications, Assistive technology
