How to choose the best counsellor for you

What are some of the questions you need to ask of yourself in order to choose the right counsellor? What are some of the questions you need to ask your counsellor in order to determine if they are the right counsellor for you? These are important questions as it really matters that you find a counsellor you are happy with. After all, you will be paying for their services and making the effort to attend sessions. Here is my list of ten key points to remember when choosing a counsellor that is right for you:

  • Understand your needs - Its important to recognise what issues you need help with and to ask yourself about your motivation and readiness for change.

  • Shop around for a counsellor - Take the time to do your research but don't be too fussy. Its important to make a start. The first step is often the hardest!

  • Ask your local community centre or support group - People with lived experience can be a great referral source because they know where the good counsellors are located.

  • Consider gender - Are you more comfortable talking with a male or female counsellor?

  • What type of mental health professional are they? - Decide if you would be better suited to talking with a counsellor, social worker, psychologist or clinical psychologist. It really depends on the nature of your issue or condition.

  • What is their counselling modality? - Does the counsellor offer an approach which can treat your issue or condition? They have been trained to provide you with profound insights of wisdom and should be up to date with continuing professional development to make sure they are aware of current trends and treatment methods.

  • Are they business-like or informal? - Do you feel comfortable in the counsellor's surroundings or meeting place?

  • Where did they gain their qualifications? - Did the counsellor gain their qualifications at a reputable training organisation? Are they registered or a member of a professional association?

  • Will you be placed on a waiting list? - Consider if the counsellor is available to see you right now or if are you willing to go on a waiting list.

  • Have a list of questions to ask your counsellor - I often find it useful to write down what I want to talk to my counsellor about. You may find it helpful to keep a list or journal of issues that are bothering you. It feels great to be the centre of attention and get things off your chest when you're feeling stressed!
